Target Audience

This course is for adult learners who need English to

  • handle basic survival needs for very routine social demands;
  • understand simple phrases containing familiar vocabulary, spoken slowly with frequent repetition;
  • interpret simple directions, schedules, signs, maps and menus;
  • fill out forms and write short, simple notes and messages based on familiar situations;
  • handle jobs and/or training that involve basic oral and written instructions and diagrams.

Course Overview

Workplace Literacy in English is a core component of the WDA Workplace Skills Qualification which workers need to acquire to be competent at the workplace. It is also an absolutely useful skill for anyone who is currently seeking employment.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to use English to:

  • clarify or request clarification;
  • receive and respond to instruction;
  • respond appropriately to common personal information questions;
  • converse about daily and leisure activities and personal interests;
  • identify or use appropriate language for informational purposes;
  • select and analyze work-related information for a given purpose and communicate it to others orally;
  • demonstrate effective telephone techniques;
  • ask for, give or clarify directions;
  • interpret advertisements, labels, charts and price tags in selecting goods and services;
  • interpret information or directions to locate merchandise;
  • identify or use different types of transportation in the community and interpret traffic information, transportation schedules and fares;
  • interpret and use maps for travel needs;
  • interpret letters, articles and information about work-related topics;
  • interpret general work-related vocabulary;
  • interpret job-related technical information such as manuals and training classes;
  • interpret written workplace announcements and notices;
  • interpret and write work-related notes, memos, letters and email;
  • interpret the procedures and forms associated with financial services;
  • interpret permit and license requirements;
  • record information on forms, charts and checklists;
  • complete a personal information form.

Course Duration

90 hours over 15 weeks (Twice a week, each lesson is 3 hours)

Course Outline

The course covers the following key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in the English language:

Listening

  • Understand and use sentence length speech dealing with familiar topics with little difficulty.
  • Derive meaning from descriptions delivered orally.
  • Follow directions and instructions in the workplace and in daily life.

Speaking
  • Use paragraph length speech automaticallyand integrate time references correctly.
  • Sequence events in time and logically.
  • Use intonation appropriately in basic situations such as making suggestions, asking questions and apologizing.
  • Handle both face-to-face conversation and non face-to-face communication like telephone conversation, email, without difficulty.
  • Give directions and instructions.

Reading
  • Read words and sentences without difficulty.
  • Arrange a series of words alphabetically.
  • Recognize some common, regular high-frequency words and read familiar texts easily.
  • Read print, cursive and multiple typefaces.
  • Understand common abbreviations.
  • Read written instructions, directions and precautions on medicine labels, factory signs and notices.
  • Understand and follow technical manuals of a familiar context.
  • Segment multiple-syllable words into individual units for ease of reading and pronunciation.
  • Read with understanding, feelings and emotions in text.
  • Read numbers to the hundreds of thousands.

Writing
  • Apply spelling and punctuation rules related to the grammar and mechanics e.g. plurals, third person in singular, capitalization.
  • Use appropriate punctuation in written material.
  • Add to limited vocabulary needed to express needs and preferences and to express likes and dislikes.

Pre Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) Assessment at CES

$1,350 (For Foreigner)

  • Nett Price after funding - for Singaporeans/PR $50* (excludes GST)

* All trainees are required to take the pre and post CAT test and a minimum of 75% attendance is required.
