The programme is designed for sea freight industry personnel including staff of logistics, manufacturing, trading and service companies to learn more about the current, practical and hands-on field applications and practices in the air logistics industry as well as those who are interested in a career in the logistics industry.

Course Overview

This one-day seminar will equip working professionals with comprehensive insight on sea freight forwarding operations. The seminar aims to provide good understanding on procedures for handling export and import shipments, documents involved in shipping, the concept of containerization and conference systems as well as importance of job costing in sea freight forwarding operations. It also provides an update on the latest development in the sea transport sector.

Course Outline

- Why shipping is still the most common mode of international transport and an update of the latest development in the sea transport sector?
- Why transport geography is important in relation to major ports of call, major shipping routes, time zones and international dateline?
- Understand the basic characteristics of ships and the different types of ships used to carry different types of cargo and the notion of ship's speed
- Understand the definition of a carrier
- Understand the procedures for handling export and import shipments
- Understand the documents used in shipping cargo
- Appreciate the role of ports and the equipment used in the port
- Understand the concept of containerization, types of containers, uses, specifications with regard to weight limitations and volumetric capacity
- Understand the concept of container leasing and functions of inland container depot
- Understand the conference systems, shipping consortia, conference terms, freight tariffs
- Understand the importance of job costing in sea freight operations.
- Principles of Material Handling and cargo operations in the port, warehouse and ship.

Funding Info

The course is an Approved-in-Principle (AIP) course under the SDF EasyNet with a support level of $2 per training hour. (Please note that the AIP status is subjected to renewal by the Skills Development Fund.) Sponsoring companies who fulfill the following criteria, are required to pay only the unsupported portion of the course fee to association :

- Participants must be Singaporeans or Permanent Residents or 3-year Work Permit Holders.
- Companies must be registered in Singapore and bear the full training cost.
- Only company cheques are allowed for payment of course fees.

As the association endeavour to qualify the course for renewal of AIP status each year, all sponsoring companies are required to sign a letter of undertaking in which they will undertake to bear the portion supported by the Skills Development Fund to the association should their sponsored staff fail to achieve 75% attendance and/or are absent from the examination.
