Target Audience

Safety assessors who need to conduct checks on manhole to certify that it is safe for workers to enter and perform assigned work.

Course Overview

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the legal requirements on manhole work
• Acquire knowledge on manholes, their hazards and consequences, control and mitigation measures
• Understand the need of having an effective manhole entry permit system
• Acquire the ability to conduct gas testing according to the gas monitoring protocol for manhole entry using a systematic approach:
  - Identify the atmospheric hazards existing in the manhole - Select the type of gas monitoring instruments to quantify the identified air contaminants - Conduct the gas testing to evaluate conditions of the manhole - Record and interpret the gas measurements obtained

30 hours, include 3 hours of assessment

• Duties and Responsibilities of all personnel involved in confined space work
• Manhole Hazards Part A - Atmospheric Hazard
• Manhole Hazards Part B - Physical and Biological Hazards
• Risk Assessment
• Manhole Entry Permit System
• Type of Gas Monitoring Instruments, their Applications and Limitations
• Accident Case Studies of Accidents in Manholes
• Selection, use, fit and maintenance of personal protective equipment use for work in manholes
• Communication and Emergency Response Plan
• Prevention and Control of Manhole Hazards
• Gas Testing Procedures

Pre-requisites

Successful completion of:

• Safety Instruction Course (Manhole) for Supervisors OR
• Building Construction Supervisors Safety Course with at least 3 years of relevant experience in manholes
  (Note: Participant has to produce a company letter to show that he/she has fulfilled at least 3 years' of relevant experience in manholes with the current employer)
